Empowering children and families across Uganda

Pass it on Trust Uganda (PIOTU) is a Non-Government Organization registered in Uganda under Registration Number: 80010000727773. It was founded Hellen Ziribagwa Nakimuli and Andrew Apedel (Co-founder) in 2014. Both young graduates at the time, the pair sought to use their skills to cause a small change in their communities; the dream was simple – to use their skills and influence through education to encourage children to keep in school and out of early marriage.

This dream was picked up by Jean Inness (RIP) and her husband Douglas Inness together with their friends and family, and they sponsored 56 children each year, in two rural schools in Eastern and Central part of Uganda; Shammah and Good Hope Nursery and Primary schools respectively and this was complemented with scholastic materials each school term that were greatly needed, which they did religiously by carrying out fundraisers in Scotland – bottle stalls, beetle drives, anything to fund raise for PIOTU projects.

In 2019 Jean and Douglas visited Uganda, Jean immediately fell in love with Shammah and the children were her warmest joy. She and her husband gave English classes, took the children on nature walks whilst training them in the art of photography, churned out their artistic selves with art and craft and reading lessons and still had time to train the teachers as well!

Feeding Program

Jean sadly passed in 2021; however, she left behind a legacy, building a massive school block for the small Soroti based school Shammah, that operated from a pair of twinned shops near a small trading center, offering a little ray of hope to the children for a primary school education as the closest primary school was at least 20km from that small village and a child should have to make a 2 hour journey to get to that school and another 2 hours back home. Jean also opened PIOTU up to new sponsors and supporters in the UK, who have continued to donate generously and tirelessly towards food drives, sending gift and general parcels and continue to sponsor children to get an education.

A new group of like-minded and enthusiastic sponsors sprouted soon after Jean’s passing to carry on the work started and built a 400+ strong Facebook group Pass IT on Trust Uganda Sponsors and supporters where sponsors could see first-hand what the ground team at Pass it on Trust Uganda was up to, offering transparency into the activities carried out and visibility into the behind-the-scenes of what it takes the team to deliver, allowing sponsors and supporters a space to participate and appreciate the process of their giving.
